Evening Service for the Jewish New Year猶太新年晚禱

Based on the music of the Spanish & Portuguese Jews of Montreal: melodies carried from medieval Iberia to Amsterdam, London, New York and Canada, set for choir, soloists and orchestra.

the work關於作品

Sacred melodies, open to every listener

The Service re-imagines the evening music of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, as a concert work. It belongs in the tradition of sacred music made for the concert hall, alongside Handel’s Messiah, Mozart’s Requiem and Ernest Bloch’s Sacred Service. No faith is required to hear it: its themes are yearning, joy, loss, renewal and consolation.

“I wanted to create a non-denominational, secular and yet spiritual piece… and to preserve the unique music of my own childhood.” From the composer’s notes, Vancouver, June

A thousand years of music on the move

When Spain and Portugal expelled their Jews in the 1490s, families carried their melodies with them. The prayers sounded much like those of Central and Eastern Europe, but the music kept the moods of Iberia, North Africa and the Levant. That sound took root in four havens, and one of them was Montreal.1490年代西班牙與葡萄牙驅逐境內猶太人時,許多家庭把他們的旋律一起帶走。
